Equality is a simple concept. It means that everyone should be treated the same regardless of identity, race, or background.

What must we know about someone else in order to treat them equally? Nothing. We don't need to judge them, or understand them, or be friends with them. All we need to know is that "all men are created equal", and then treat others like we would want to be treated.

Equity, on the other hand, is complex. It's actually the opposite of equality. It seeks to identify advantages and disadvantages between people, and then to use calculated acts of discrimination to help ensure more equal outcomes. Since this is impossible to do in a consistent and accurate manner, advocates of equity have historically turned their attention to an easier goal: attacking those who are perceived to have accomplished better outcomes than others.

There's nothing wrong with trying to improve outcomes for any group or person by helping them in individual ways to achieve their goals. We should strive to see improvements for all Americans. But if we throw away equality under the law and instead pick up discrimination to do so, it's antithetical to our founding principles.

The government doesn’t need to know anything about you to enforce equality. It must know everything about you to enforce equity.
