With no hesitation whatsoever, Franklin responded, “A republic, if you can keep it.”

The United States is - or was - a Constitutional Republic, not an empire. If we do not want to suffer the fate of empires, then we need to drive the federal government back into the confines of the Constitution, by law and by votes.
